Jack Canfield’s Principles of Success

“I tell my audiences that if you work the principles, the principles will always work. You’ve got to do the work. It’s one thing to know something but it is another thing to do it.” Jack Canfield

Success Principle #1: E + R = O (Events Plus Response Equals Outcome). The basic idea is that every outcome you experience in life (whether it is success or failure, wealth or poverty, health or illness, intimacy or estrangement, joy or frustration) is the result of how you have responded to an earlier event or events in your life.

The first thing you have to do is to give up all blaming and complaining. Blaming is an ineffective response. It’s a response to an event that doesn’t produce anything better. Look at your life and ask yourself what would I have to do differently to get a different outcome and not just complaining about it?

There are only 3 responses you have any control over – your thoughts, the images you hold in your head, the behaviours you engage in – what you say and do and what you don’t do. Change your negative thoughts to positive ones. Change what you daydream about. Change your habits. Change what you read. Change your friends. Change how you talk.

Success Principle #2: Decide what you want. What is it you want? How do you get to where you want to be from where you are now? It is critically important that you get really clear about this.

Most of us are not putting the destination into our inner GPS system. It doesn’t work until you enter a destination. Your subconscious mind will not figure out how to do it. Most of us won’t commit to what we want because we cannot see how to get there. We don’t commit to goals because we cannot see the ‘how’. If you wait until the ‘how’ is clear before you commit to the ‘what’ the ‘how’ will not show up.

You got to take a leap of faith and commit to what you want but not yet seeing how it’s possible. Don’t mind what other people think – commit to the goal and think big. Make a list of 101 things you want to do before you die. Because if you have 101 things written down and you let people know about it, people will call you up to help.
