Michael Johnson: It takes what it takes

Record Breaker, Serial Winner and Sporting Icon

One of the most distinctive sprinters in the history of track and field with his powerful, upright stride pattern, Michael is widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters of all time. Four times an Olympic champion and eight times a world champion, he piled up a career total of 12 Olympic and World Championship gold medals by the time he retired from competition after the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Between 1990 and 1997, he created a remarkable sequence of 58 consecutive wins over 400 meters. He also strung together a winning streak of 32 races over 200 meters between 1990 and 1992. He is the only person to hold both the 200 meters and 400 meters world records and is the only male athlete to defend successfully the Olympic 400 meters crown.

Michael Johnson recently spoke at Pendulum 2023, imparting his years of wisdom on high performance, motivation and perseverance onto the audience. One of the key themes of Johnson’s presentation was hard work beats everything.

“If you want to achieve greatness… when it comes to the fundamentals, you don’t have a choice. It takes what it takes.”

Johnson also recognises that setbacks and failures are inevitable in any pursuit of greatness. He emphasises the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Johnson has faced his fair share of setbacks, including a severe injury that could have ended his career. However, he refused to give up and worked tirelessly to come back stronger.

Another important factor in high performance, according to Johnson, is mental preparation. He emphasises the importance of having a strong mindset, believing in oneself, and staying focused and motivated even when things get tough. Johnson believes that the mental aspect of training is just as important as the physical aspect, and that developing mental toughness is essential for achieving success.

Finally, Johnson also emphasises the importance of having a support system. Whether it’s family, friends, coaches, or teammates, having people who believe in and support one’s goals can make all the difference in achieving success. Johnson acknowledges the role that his support system played in his own success, and encourages others to surround themselves with positive and supportive people.

In conclusion, Michael Johnson’s years of wisdom on high performance, motivation, and perseverance offer valuable insights for anyone looking to achieve greatness in their own pursuits. By emphasising the importance of hard work, resilience, mental preparation, and support systems, Johnson offers a roadmap for success that can be applied to any area of life.
